MUM DROVE WITH CUSTOMS OFFICER ON BONNET OF CAR AND CHILD IN BACKSEAT

first_imgA woman drove almost 20 metres with a customs officer clinging to the bonnet of her car with her child in the back after failing to stop at a checkpoint.Caroline Duggan overtook a school bus and several cars on a continuous white line while trying to avoid an initial checkpoint. But the mother-of-three was then waved down by another customs officer while driving her illegally-registered BMW in October 2011. Duggan, 33, of Hawthorn Hill in Manorcunningham, then drove at speed at the checkpoint to try and avoid it.One of the officers was pushed onto the bonnet and Mrs Duggan roared at him to “get the f*** off my car.”The officer was uninjured and Mrs Duggan refused to get out of the Northern-Ireland registered 5 series BMW car.Mrs Duggan appeared for sentencing at Letterkenny District Court after being found guilty of motoring offences. The court heard that Ms Duggan had been stopped just days before the incident at another customs checkpoint and had given her name as Caroline Martin and a different address.Judge Paul Kelly had told an earlier sitting of Letterkenny District Court he could think of few things more dangerous than someone driving at speed at another person.“There is little more frightening than being approached by a car at any
speed, not to mention having a three year old in it.“She knew what she was doing as she had been stopped two days earlier. It was entirely brought about by her own behaviour,” he said.He then sent Ms Duggan on a four week driving course and adjourned the case until yesterday.Ms Duggan had since sold the car to raise the €1,000 penalty after the car was seized. At yesterday’s sitting solicitor Kieran Dillon pleaded with Judge Paul Kelly to be lenient with his client.“She deeply regrets what she allowed herself to do on the day in question,” said the solicitor.Judge Kelly responded: “This was entirely self-inflicted. It is widely know, particularly in this part of the country, it you are not permitted to drive a UK-registered vehicle and that’s what has given rise to this incident. Thankfully the Customs officer involved was not injured.”Fining her €350 for careless driving Judge Paul Kelly said: “This is the most extraordinary case. She has hopefully learned from this experience and she had better implement everything she has learned on this court or she will be put off the road.”MUM DROVE WITH CUSTOMS OFFICER ON BONNET OF CAR AND CHILD IN BACKSEAT was last modified: January 18th, 2013 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:BMWCaroline Duggancustoms officersJudge Paul Kellymanorcunninghampatrollast_img read more

Jake Amo: Ghanaian toddler breaks the internet

first_img3 November 2016During October, various internet photo memes popped up featuring a Ghanaian toddler absorbed in his art work. The boy became a viral sensation across social networks in South Africa, and now the full, inspirational story behind the photo has been revealed. According to This is Africa, the original 2015 photo of the boy, Jake Amo, was taken by American photographer Carlos Cortes. Cortes was in the country, following renowned Ghanaian artist Solomon Adufah, who was returning to his home country after growing up in the US.The two visited a pre-school in the village of Asempanaye, in the Koforidua region, as part of Adufah’s project to promote art classes in Ghanaian schools, where the image of Jake was taken.Adufah shared one of Cortes’s photos on Instagram in January 2016, to help to promote his project. But it was only in September and October that South African internet users took to remixing the photo into comic memes. But it’s not all about the laughs. Thanks to the popularity of the meme and the story behind it, people have started to contribute to Adufah’s art initiative, Homeland Ghana, raising more than $4 000 within 48 hours for art education in and art supplies for Ghanaian schools.Dear Internet, let’s donate to Jake. The kid we have had fun with. Let’s be as enthusiastic about donating. https://t.co/wYdnKnma2s pic.twitter.com/w1i0cWuS6Q— Khaya Dlanga (@khayadlanga) October 27, 2016While initially surprised and somewhat apprehensive by the popularity of the Jake meme, Adufah told the BBC he was happy that it had inspired the world to find out more about his home country and to contribute to the Homeland Ghana project. He said: “This money could make a huge difference to the kids – this could be something really positive going forward.”You: But I was here just 30 minutes ago, do you really have to sign me in again?New Security Guard: pic.twitter.com/E6RzgNUdxd— Khaya Dlanga (@khayadlanga) October 24, 2016The memes range from tongue-in-cheek observations on local politics and social absurdities to references to other popular culture. Most are light-hearted and respectful of the image of the young Ghanaian boy. When the teacher asks you to write a list of noisemakers and someone you hate coughs…… pic.twitter.com/0XKdkZQxiQ— Night King (@Omarvelli) October 23, 2016Speaking fondly of the time he spent with the children at the school, Adufah recently addressed the online popularity of the photo on his Instagram profile, along with new photo of Jake.In the post, he writes “everyone say hi to my buddy Jake. These were moments in Ghana during my art workshop with the kids. Each kid received brand new set of crayons, pencil colours, pencils, toys and other wonderful goodies. The expressions on their faces were heartfelt.”Adufah will be returning to Ghana in 2017 with his Homeland Ghana project, where he will continue to work with the children, while providing resources for their art classes. His ultimate goal, he says, is an art school and community centre that will inspire children to follow their artistic dreams.Meanwhile, Jake, who has just turned four, is apparently still unaware of his online fame and is much more interested in continuing with his drawing.Source: This is AfricaSouthAfrica.info reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? I bought this wig for a fancy dress party but it can be such a attractive wig that i’m heading to maintain it for myself. It’s a wonderful wig, very modern and for a extremely reasonable rate.Reviews from purchasers :Fabulous product for excellent priceGood for the priceI would definitely recommend both the wig and the company!Great for photo boothsdone its job looked okDress up wig for fun This is a fantastic entertaining dressing up merchandise but not something you’d be able to use as a convincing substitute to authentic hair as it truly is rather skinny. It was good for the use we needed it for which was a tween’s photo booth where by wigs, hats and eyeglasses were remaining torn on and off. We however have it in the dressing up bag and it is drastically superior and longer than other folks i acquired from poundland.Unquestionably loved wearing this wig as a brunette i remodeled into pammy for a hen night time. For the price tag was every little thing i wished and a lot more. Overlook terrible evaluations as this great for a fancy dress night.I would definitely propose each the wig and the business. I wore this wig to dress as nancy spungen for my birthday party, it was excellent good quality, fitted flawlessly and was a bargain pricei also desired to thank tinxs, who understood my time limit and did anything in their energy to get it delivered to me on time. Without doubt brilliant buyer provider. Here are the specifications for the Tinxs Women’s Long Curly Fancy Dress Wigs Blonde Cosplay Costume Ladies Wig Party:Perfect for hen nights, halloween, fancy dress parties, themed parties or just for a change of lookOne size fits most, With elastic band for comfortable wearing, Reusable and easy to be taken care ofSynthetic Hair —Soft Touch, Natural Looking. Glamorous Fashion Hair— feels and move like real human hair.Brightens up excited and hilarious atmosphere. With elastic band for comfortable wearing. Reusable and easy to be taken care of. Not suitable for perm or dye.It can be restyled or shorn to many different lengths as you like. I purchased this for a fancy dress party for the value it can be alright it is long and wavy ,experienced to reduce the fringe a bit a lot more and iron it lol. You are unable to seriously comb or brush it as it comes out i search a little bit like jimmy seville in drag but as it truly is for a party it’ll do.Great cost, though the fringe was a little bit as well long so i had to give it a hair minimize, stayed on very well nevertheless i did have a hair band on way too. Looked shiny and plastic in the gentle and resembled barbie hair but i only preferred it for my halloween costume.Fantastic reactions from individuals. No 1 recognised me it truly is so convincing.Purchased this for my brother to use on a stag wkend excellent sporting and it was excellent enjoyment. It wouldn’t pass as a true wig as its much too shiny but superior for dressing up.Theres not incredibly a lot hair on it and it seems to be shiny and pretend so if your going for a cosplay or one thing, get a better quality a single. My minor sister of seven takes advantage of it now to engage in dress up so its not all undesirable.Came promptly, in about three days, i bought it to have on for a 70s disco it is long and wavy just like the pic, and extremely superior for the cash contemplating i am on a tight budget, and i can use it for other dress up instances i would endorse it nonetheless( i would only use as a entertaining dress up wig as it won’t seem genuine its too shiny).Artificial hair looked wonderful. Maintain the wig in a safe and sound place to steer clear of frizzing and ruining of the curls. Advise for cosplayers on spending plan.Extremely certainly fake, overly shiny and the fringe element of the wig on my distinct item was not as even as it could have been. The good thing is i obtained this item for a fancy dress birthday party instead than for each and every day use for the reason that in the image i thought it appeared somewhat all-natural. The product or service did having said that stay on my head during the evening and did in shape quite comfortably which did impress me.For the selling price you cant complain but the picture is really deceptive. It was pretty yellow and built me look like jimmy saville relatively than alice in wonderland. But it was for a fancy dress party and gave the ideal influence.last_img read more

The Coming Of Virtualized Storage

first_imgMatt Asay Serverless Backups: Viable Data Protection for … Cloud Hosting for WordPress: Why Everyone is Mo… Related Posts Tags:#data center#SDN#software defined data center#software defined networking#storage#VMware center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting How Intelligent Data Addresses the Chasm in Cloud Today the race is on to virtualize all aspects of the data center. Dubbed the software-defined data center (SDDC) or sometimes software defined networking (SDN), SDDC is a market IDC projects will top $3.7 billion by 2016.It’s a hot market, too: just this week, Cisco, IBM, VMware, Red Hat and others have banded together under a Linux Foundation-hosted consortium called OpenDaylight. But while this is a significant step toward virtualizing the networking layer of the data center, it may simply be a prelude to the next phase of virtualization: storage.VMware led the way in virtualizing servers in the data center, creating enormous value for its shareholders over the last decade. Originally acquired by EMC for $635 million in 2003, VMware is now a standalone company with a market capitalization of more than $30 billion. Last year it acquired a leading SDN startup, Nicira, for nearly $1.3 billion. That move scared a lot of data center vendors – primarily Cisco – who don’t want to see VMware dominate networking virtualization as completely as it came to own server virtualization.Too often overlooked in all the billions of dollars sloshing around servers and networking competition in SDDC is the laggard, storage. Traditional storage is a $10 billion annual business, but until recently it hasn’t made much headway into virtualization. That may be about to change. To better understand the trends shaping the rise of the software-defined storage play, I sat down recently with Dr. Kieran Harty, CEO of Tintri, makers of storage systems for software defined data centers, and one of a core virtualization pioneer. Harty ran engineering at VMware from 1999 to 2006 and his teams created the software products that virtualized the server side of the SDDC equation.ReadWrite: Remind us again what VMware was trying to do a dozen years ago when your teams were focused on bringing virtualization to servers.Harty: The basic problems virtualization solved back then we called server consolidation and over-provisioning. Business wanted to move compute workloads from large, costly, proprietary, single servers (usually Sun servers) running one application, oftentimes at only 10% of capacity, to clusters of cheap, commodity, Linux servers. VMware pioneered a technology called the hypervisor that allowed virtualization to make this possible – on the server.ReadWrite: Today VMware enjoys roughly 90% market share in server virtualization. The spectacular success of server virtualization begs the big question of what comes next. Can the same benefits of virtualization on servers be applied to the rest of the data center?Harty: This is what gives rise to the concept of the software-defined data center (SDDC) – a data center with infrastructure that is fundamentally more flexible, automated and cost-effective; infrastructures that understand application workloads and can automatically and efficiently allocate pooled resources to match the application demands. Rather than construct data centers full of over-provisioned and siloed resources, a SDDC would more efficiently utilize and share all aspects of the infrastructure: servers, networking and storage. While servers, and to a lesser extent networks, have embraced SDDC, storage lags significantly behind and continues to cause a great deal of pain in the data center today. Fortunately, some of the key technologies that brought the sweeping changes to servers and networks are taking shape for storage.ReadWrite: What kind of changes?Harty: A quick look at some of the most successful disruptive technologies reveals that many of them “crossed the chasm” with the help of a few common key ingredients: standardization, hardware innovation and abstraction. In the case of server virtualization, the standardization of Intel’s x86 platform and the proliferation of the open source Linux operating system massively disrupted the server market. Armed with a new generation of multi-core processors and VMware’s hypervisor technology, server virtualization conquered the data center.  Networks followed a similar path starting with TCP/IP standardizing the network protocol. Gigabit Ethernet increased transmission speed by an order of magnitude. OpenFlow, which set the foundation of an open and standards-based software-defined networking, paved the way for the most significant changes in networks in several decades. ReadWrite: What kinds of changes in standards, hardware innovation and abstraction are leading to disruption in the storage market?Harty: For 20 years, little has changed in the world of legacy storage designed for physical environments. As data centers become more virtualized, there is a growing gap due to the complete mismatch between how storage systems were designed and the demands of virtual environments. It’s a bit like people who don’t speak the same languages and have a hard time understanding each other – storage speaks LUNs and volumes; servers speak VMs. As a result, they don’t understand each other very well. Storage allocation, management and performance troubleshooting for the virtualized infrastructure are difficult, if not impossible with legacy storage. Companies have tried to work around this obstacle by over-provisioning storage which is very expensive and increases complexity.ReadWrite: Is there where flash technology enters and disrupts storage? Can we power through these legacy storage challenges with performance improvements that are an order of magnitude over those of traditional spinning disk?Harty: Storage has always been about performance and data management. Flash removes the performance challenges and levels the competitive playing field for storage vendors. Flash enables very dense storage systems that can host thousands of VMs in just a few rack units of space. But flash by itself – without the intelligence – only gets us so far. And while some industry players are attempting to make virtualization products adapt to legacy storage through APIs, or retrofit legacy storage to become virtualization aware, neither goes far enough to bridge the yawning gap between these two mismatched technologies – you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. What is needed to solve this problem is storage that has been completely redefined to operate in the virtual environment and uses the constructs of virtualization. In short, VM-aware storage.ReadWrite: What do you mean, VM-aware?Harty: Virtualized environments require storage designed for virtualization. Enterprises expecting to get the full benefit out of the software-defined data center need storage that’s simple and agile to manage, while delivering the performance required by modern applications. They will need storage that understands the IO patterns of virtual environments and that automatically manages quality of service (QoS) for each VM. We eliminate an entire layer of unnecessary complexity if we stop talking about LUNs or volumes. The broad adoption of virtual machines as the data center lingua franca gives us de facto standardization for software-defined storage. The rapid growth and declining cost of flash technology provides the hardware innovation. This leaves us with the one last essential missing piece – the abstraction between storage and VMs, an abstraction that understands VMs while being able to abstract and pool the underlying storage resources and deliver the benefits of simple, high performing and cost effective storage. We call that VM-aware storage.Image courtesy of Shutterstock.last_img read more

Floral tributes paid to Alwar lynching victim, Pehlu Khan, amid protests

first_imgAmid high drama and protests by right-wing groups, the members of a peace march on Friday passed through Behror in Alwar district of Rajasthan, where dairy farmer Pehlu Khan was lynched allegedly by a mob of cow vigilantes in April this year. Aman Biradari convener Harsh Mander, who led the march, paid floral tributes at the spot where Pehlu Khan, 55, was attacked. As the closure of investigation against six persons named in the lynching case created an outrage, the Opposition Congress raised a question mark over the “clean chit” given to the accused. “Police have connived with the criminals to ensure their release. This is yet another instance of the BJP government giving patronage to anti-social elements for political gains,” Pradesh Congress president Sachin Pilot said.Mr. Pilot said Pehlu Khan’s family members had agitated for justice and even joined demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, but they were disappointed by the action of police taken under the ruling party’s pressure. All evidence and facts of the incident suggested that Pehlu Khan was waylaid and killed by those whom he had named in his dying declaration, he said. Civil rights groups in an open letter to CM Vasundhara Raje condemned the closure of probe.Members of Hindu Jagran Manch, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad confronted Mr. Mander and his fellow activists at Behror when their “Karwan-e-Mohabbat” (caravan of love) was crossing the streets. The activists of right-wing groups raised slogans and hurled stones at the vehicles of marchers while demanding that they leave the town immediately.A heavy police force was deployed near the spot on the Jaipur-Delhi national highway, at a short distance from the Behror police station, where Pehlu Khan was attacked. When the police refused to allow the marchers to go to the place, Mr. Mander staged a dharna outside the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, declaring that he would not leave until the march was allowed to proceed.Later, Mr. Mander was allowed to go alone to the spot. The civil servant-turned-activist offered floral tributes and also met the officers at the police station to express his disappointment over removal of accused from the FIR and registration of criminal cases against Pehlu Khan and his sons. The march also met with resistance at Kotputli on way to Jaipur. Mr. Mander told reporters after arriving here that he was shocked by the way the CID-CB of Rajasthan police had let off six accused in the case despite Pehlu Khan’s dying declaration clearly stating their names.“This is something unprecedented. I have never heard of such an instance before, as the Supreme Court has held that a dying declaration does not need any corroborative evidence,” said Mr. Mander. If there was any doubt the veracity of involvement of the accused, the police should have left it to the court to take a view and filed the charge-sheet, he said.last_img read more
