Get facts straight on gun control issue

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionI find it interesting when reading letters in The Gazette where the writers adamantly state their opinions without bothering to research their beliefs. A Feb. 24 letter from Geraldine Krawitz attacked Obama and the Democrats for inaction following the Sandy Hook shooting. She stated that “both the Executive branch and Congress were Democrat controlled” at the time of the tragedy and they “did nothing.”The 113th Congress convening in 2013 was Republican-controlled, as was the 112th during the preceding two years. A Democrat-sponsored bill to reestablish the assault weapons ban was brought to a Senate vote in 2013 but was defeated after strong NRA opposition. (Yes, some Democrats are beholden to the gun lobby). An earlier ban failed to be renewed in 2004 under Republican control. Obama was highly supportive of the legislation and issued 23 executive orders to help curb gun violence after Sandy Hook as per Wikipedia. We frequently hear that gun control legislation will unduly affect “law abiding citizens.” Let me point out that Nickolas Cruz was a “law-biding citizen” until the school shooting. Stephan Paddock was a “law-abiding citizen” prior to the Las Vegas massacre. Omar Mateen, Adam Lanza, James Holmes and the Columbine shooters all used legally purchased weapons to kill innocent victims.Wayne VirklerRexfordMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?Police: Schenectady woman tried to take car in Clifton Park hours after arrest, release in prior the…EDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homeslast_img read more

Brazil Goes Top, Argentina Stunned

first_img2018 WORLD CUP QUALIFIERSBrazil powered to the top of the table in South America’s 2018 World Cup qualifying race on Tuesday with a victory over Venezuela as Argentina suffered a shock defeat at home to Paraguay.Goals from Manchester City teenager Gabriel Jesus and Chelsea’s Willian secured a 2-0 win over Venezuela in a match interrupted by a lengthy floodlight failure that plunged Merida’s Estadio Metropolitano into darkness. The victory was Brazil’s fourth consecutive win of the qualifying campaign and left the five-time world champions on top of the standings with 21 points after 10 games. The win was the latest evidence of Brazil’s resurgence under new coach Tite, who took over following the sacking of Dunga in June after the Selecao’s Copa America Centenario flop.It is the first time since qualifying began that Brazil have led the standings, and the team look firmly on course to maintain their record of never having failed to qualify for a World Cup.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Dragons finally got their UEFA EURO 2016 target completed after the fifth attempt. It will stay registered that the new coach, Mehmed Baždarević, debut victory on the bench of national team.Otherwise, the hosts started the game cautiously, but extremely aggressive. Dragons have been imposed, tended to score at an early stage of the match. The initiative paid off in the 13th minute when Dragons break through host’s defense. Lulić perfectly laid off a lofted ball to the captain, and Džeko crashed in a powerful low shot for the lead of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hosts goalkeeper Ferran Pol was powerless. There were no good opportunities in the next 10 minutes. After 24 minutes, Edin Višća has tried his own shot, but it was off the target. The hosts spent a game in a difficult defense.Dragons performed another action after 32 minutes. Višća and Mujdža combined, and Mujdža assisted for Ibišević who missed the goal. Score remained the same.In 61 minute, the match clock showed 0: 3. Again the main roles were played by Senad Lulić as an assistant and Edin Džeko as implementer. Neymar wants Barcelona return – Spanish reports

first_img0Shares0000Neymar (R), with his doctor Rodrigo Lasmar (L), in Brazil last week © AFP/File / NELSON ALMEIDAMADRID, Spain, Mar 9 – Neymar already regrets moving to Paris Saint-Germain and is seeking a shock return to Barcelona, according to reports in the Spanish media on Friday. In the same week that PSG crashed out of the Champions League, and only seven months after he joined the club for a world record Sh26bn ($264 million, Neymar´s future has become uncertain. Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims the Brazilian, recovering from surgery on a broken foot in Brazil, has made contact with Barca to ask how he can engineer a return. The article adds Neymar has explained he made a mistake in leaving the club, was wrong to want independence from Lionel Messi and has been disappointed by the standard of opposition in Ligue 1.Barca, however, is not the only club Neymar is reportedly targeting as a potential way out of PSG.Madrid-based newspaper AS reports Neymar´s father has met with Real Madrid, who are ready to pay 400million euros to sign the striker.Asked about the speculation on Friday, Real coach Zinedine Zidane said: “Neymar could play in all the clubs because he is very good, like many players.“I´m not going to talk about a player that is not mine. On the 400 million, they paid 220 million and when they bought me they paid 72.“It seemed crazy to me and 10 years later they are paying 220 million. It can be that in the next 10 years someone will pay 400m, or sooner, I do not know.”Mundo Deportivo concedes Neymar´s courting of Barcelona may even be a tactic to justify a move to Real, given the Catalan club are likely to reject any chance to re-sign the 26-year-old.Barcelona are still embroiled in a financial dispute over a bonus due to Neymar last summer, which the club cancelled when they believe it became clear he was moving to PSG.Neymar missed PSG’s last 16 loss to Real on Tuesday after undergoing surgery on a broken foot in Brazil last week.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more
